Title: 1st ASEAN Healthy City Conference
Event Date: 18 June 2002 - 21 June 2002
Kuching City has been selected by ASEAN Secretariat to host the 1st ASEAN Healthy City Conference, which was held on 18-21 June 2002.

Many cities in the ASEAN region are participating in the WHO initiatives of Healthy Cities; UNDP’S Local Agenda 21 and sustainable development, The Urban Governance Initiative and UNCHS’s Sustainable Cities Projects. They all focus on Equity, Participatory process, Sustainability, Transparency, and Capacity Building.

Need for an ASEAN Focus
-----------------------
Cities in the ASEAN member states have reached different stages of development; have different priorities based on their needs, with different constrains in expertise and resources and variation in city governance; and are involved in different initiatives.

Therefore there is a need among ASEAN members to have a consensus on how to approach the healthy cities initiative and other similar initiatives for development; sustainability, participatory process and capacity building.

This workshop is to develop consensus statements for a framework and direction that can be a guide for the member states or cities.

· To have a ASEAN Healthy Cities organisational structure (should there be regular meeting or conference of member states, how often it should be done; who should lead, the term of reference for the meeting or conference and who should be the secretariat);

The ASEAN style approach;

An ASEAN Healthy Cities priority issues in quality of life or other matters of concern to ASEAN cities or member states.

To develop a bridging or linking mechanism between different cities or different programmes to share experience and expertise.

To have a registry of projects for purpose of record and development of expertise.
